‘SNL’ takes on trial Derek Chauvin through a Minnesota morning show

“It’s been a tough week for the news,” Nwodim’s anchor said. “There’s a lot to go into, but first let’s start with Derek Chauvin’s trial.”

Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, is on trial charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree murder for the death of George Floyd.

Nwodim’s anchor said watching the trial caused “so many bad feelings” last summer.

“We all seem to agree that there’s no way Derek Chauvin is moving away from that,” McKinnon’s anchor said.

Nwodim and Thompson’s anchors stopped her there.

“Well …” Nwodim and Thompson’s anchors said, scratching their faces.

Nwodim’s anchor added, “Let’s say we’ve already seen this movie.”

McKinnon’s anchor noted that “historically, police have escaped in other cases like this.”

“Historically?” Thompson’s anchor asked.

“She means every time,” Nwodim’s anchor said.

Moffat’s anchor tried to jump, saying he wanted to choose his words carefully when talking about topics like race.

“To quote Thomas Jefferson …” he began.

“This is a bad start,” Thompson’s anchor replied.

McKinnon’s anchor said then that the morning show’s team should get another opinion, so he asked the show’s black man, played by Chris Redd, to join.

“Man, don’t get me in this mess!” Redd’s meteorologist said. “I’m still in hot water for being in that Paul Pierce video.”

Then the news team tried to move on to other big stories of the week.

“More sad news this week, unfortunately yesterday we lost royalty,” McKinnon’s anchor said.

“Yes, the DMX rapper died,” Nwodim’s anchor added.

McKinnon’s anchor tried to correct his companion by saying he was talking about the “prince.”

“Girl, Prince has been killed,” Nwodim’s anchor said referring to the late singer.

Moffat’s anchor explained that he was referring to Prince Philip of England.

“Meghan Markle’s boyfriend ??” Thompson’s anchor asked.

Then the team tried to find another story that everyone could agree on, but after a while the anchors gave up and said the show’s opening phrase: “Live … From New York It’s Saturday night! “
