One is a new FEMA site at the Esperanza Community Center in Hunting Park, one of the neighborhoods hardest hit by COVID-19.
Patients like Samuel Barios say they are relieved to have a clinic in their neighborhood.
“Lack of transportation for people, it’s hard for them to get to remote places, they don’t have cars,” he said.
The site will shoot about 2,000 people a day in a neighborhood with one of the lowest vaccination rates.
Officials say only 16% of the city’s Hispanic population has been vaccinated.
“It’s great for the neighborhood, yes,” Barios said.
In Marple Township, there were car lines surrounded around Delaware County Community College. A new clinic there expects to vaccinate 12,000 people this weekend with Johnson & Johnson.
“I was going to take anything I could get. I’ve been trying to get it for a long time,” Derrick Edwards said.
The site is by appointment only and during the first weekend is only open to those in phase 1a and 1b.
The county says that as more vaccines become available, people get more flexibility with appointments.
“People can connect online and choose which place and which vaccine they want to receive. If they want to be more secure in their schedule, they can sign up at one of our permanent locations or they can sign up for a while here and they can come here this weekend, ”said Howard Lazarus, the executive director of Delaware County.
The county expects to vaccinate 140,000 people before the summer.
“I have a lot of mitigating circumstances, so I wanted to avoid it to protect myself and my family,” Onley’s Crystal White said.
He says he gets the shot in the hope that life will soon return to normal.
“I’m hopeful,” he added.
By now, about a third of Philadelphians have been vaccinated.
The city moves to Phase 1C on Monday, which means there will be even more people eligible for their shots.
