“I don’t think even if I’m vaccinated, I would go to a place full of people, where people don’t wear masks,” Fauci said. he said Business Insider during an interview published this week.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 179 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the U.S. as of Saturday afternoon.
However, Fauci said Americans should not yet claim victory over the virus as cases increase in several states.
Michigan, in particular, has experienced an increase in cases, with the coronavirus tearing down jobs, churches and other public areas, according to the New York Times.
“It’s kind of a race between the vaccine and the possibility of another increase,” Fauci said.
Fauci said between 70 and 85 percent of the population needs to be vaccinated to achieve herd immunity, which could happen in June if the U.S. continues to administer an average of 3 million vaccines a day, according to Business Insider .
“If we could only hold out for a while,” he told Business Insider, “we’ll get to a point where protecting the community at large through the vaccine would be very unlikely to have another increase.”
Although Fauci does not go indoors or travel, he allows neighbors vaccinated in his home without masks.
“We feel very comfortable in the house without masks and we can have physical contact and things like that,” Fauci said.
Fauci said his prudent lifestyle could also be due to his occupation.
“To be honest with you, I don’t have time to do anything else,” he said. “I haven’t had a day off in a year and three months.”
The CDC has published guidelines for vaccinated people, stating that they can travel home without having to quarantine and that they can meet other vaccinated people without masks.
