On Saturday, the city’s website for COVID-19 vaccine registration showed an option for people over the age of 16 to book an appointment. Vaccinations for this group at the city’s vaccination sites will begin on Tuesday.
In a statement, Mayor Eric Garcetti’s office said all three vaccines will be available for people over the age of 18, with the Pfizer vaccine authorized for those aged 16 and 17.
“We continue to receive a limited supply of vaccines and, when we receive a larger supply in the coming weeks, the city will be prepared to administer even more vaccines quickly and safely,” the statement said.
The change to the city’s website comes days before California is officially in place to extend vaccine eligibility to residents of that age group.
Currently, statewide eligibility allows people 50 and older to have an appointment with the vaccine. California residents 16 years of age or older will be officially eligible on April 15, but other local municipalities have opted to open it sooner, including Long Beach.
