Two Salt Lake County police officers were injured, one in one eye and the other in the cheek, and the alleged assailant was shot dead Saturday morning outside the county jail.
Both officers were taken to a hospital and are expected to survive, according to authorities. At the moment their identities have not been revealed.
Salt Lake County Police Chief Rosie Rivera told a news conference that the two injured officers were comrades and were part of the enclosure security corps.
The shot in one eye is in critical but stable condition and has undergone surgery, according to authorities.
“We believe he will survive,” Rivera said.
The other policeman suffered a gunshot wound to the cheek and is expected to be discharged from the hospital, according to authorities.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said Rivera, who added that police have images of the shooting of a surveillance camera.
Rivera noted that the alleged assailant, a man in his 30s, was not known to the department.
“We don’t know what his intentions were,” he stated.
