How to sign in to your devices without passwords

For now, the best way to sign in to macOS without having to type a password is to buy a MacBook Air or a MacBook Pro with a Touch ID sensor located on top of the keyboard. It is now present on all Apple laptops, although it is not yet an option on desktop Macs and it is not possible to add it to the desktop by purchasing an accessory.

If you have a MacBook with Touch ID available, you can open the file apple menu, choose System preferencesand then select Touch ID i Add fingerprint. Up to three fingerprints can be added per user, and you can also use the biometric security method to make Apple Pay purchases on your Mac as well as use it to sign in.

When you log in to the login screen, all you have to do is place your finger on the sensor and you will be granted access (if there are multiple user accounts registered with macOS, you may need to select yours). Fingerprint data can be deleted or replaced by returning to the file Touch ID screen.

The other option without a password is to use an Apple Watch, which works on both laptops and notebooks and with all recent versions of Apple Watch (see supported models here). Open the Apple menu, then choose System preferences i Security and privacyand check the box Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac.

As long as your Mac and Apple Watch are signed in to the same iCloud account, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth are turned on in macOS and the Apple Watch is set up with a password, it will start directly in your account when your Apple Watch is approaching the computer.

Android allows you to sign in to your phone using your face or fingerprint, although Android is Android, these technologies are implemented in slightly different ways depending on the make and model of your phone. Your phone may have these two options, but at least one of them should be available.

In the case of Google Pixel phones, if you open the main Android settings app and choose Security, you can see the options available on your device – tap one, such as Facial unlock, to configure it.
