India bans exports of covid remdesivir drugs amid rising viruses

India has banned the export of the drug Remdesivir, which is used to treat Covid-19, as the country recorded a record number of new coronaviruses daily cases.

The government took the step amid a sharp rise in demand for injection, the health ministry said in a statement on Sunday, adding that “there is potential for further increases in this demand in the next days “.

Seven Indian companies produce Remdesivir under voluntary license agreements with Gilead Sciences Inc. They have an installed capacity of about 3.9 million units per month.

The government of India is also taking steps to curb the hoarding and black marketing of the drug and expand the production of the drug.
