Game of Thrones both meant a lot to me personally and professionally. Writing about the program helped me build a career. But I can’t overcome my hatred for how it ended. That’s why I’ve been determined to never see him again: Tyrion certainly doesn’t look like back with affection for the first half of the Oberyn / Mountain battle. But he was willing to watch the first episode before the show’s tenth anniversary, and that’s when he did the last one he never expected to happen: Game of Thrones This investment means one day the magnificent narrative that made up the first six seasons of the show, which is why he was able to disappoint both viewers in the last two, will be what most fans remember.

The premiere opens with a giant wall of ice, blue-eyed zombies and ice demons. It ends with the coral knight, who has been caught having sex with his twin sister, the queen, who pushed an innocent child out of the tower. And in between, he successfully introduces a ridiculous number of characters, all with complicated relationships and stories, spread across two huge continents.
The premiere works because the distinctive features of what made the show great were immediately in place. After his first shot at a pilot it resulted in a $ 10 million disaster, showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss quickly realized the changes that needed to be made for the series to be successful. The second pilot, with his liberal use of wide shots and stunning real-world scenarios, establishes the grandeur of the many incredible places the series would explore. The episode has a scope as epic as the story I was trying to tell. The premiere also includes quality costumes and accessories, which only improved over time. This was a great effort with an aesthetic alike.
None of this would have mattered if it weren’t for the performers and the script. Although no one knew it at the time, Game of ThronesThe cast, made up mostly of non-stars and newcomers, is a talent killer. That impressive group was able to stand out right away because the writing was crisp, fun, insightful and offered the necessary exposure without feeling forced or heavy. Go back and watch Tyrion’s interactions with an enraged Jon, when Tyrion compares being a dwarf to a bastard. It’s as good as everything that followed.
The pilot also has the great promise that the program made later in his career: it hints at an even bigger story hidden beneath the surface. Why exactly do Jaime and Ned hate each other so much? Is that why Cat’s sister said the Lannisters killed the king’s hand? What does all this have to do with the creepy Targaryen type that crosses the narrow sea? You know, the guy who hears his sister getting married to a giant boy on horseback? No, the others uncle feeling his sister. This is an episode that makes you want to see the next one. There is a reason many of us did for years. It’s the same reason we watched each episode several times, read all of these theories, and learned about Westeros ’story as if we were preparing to take a test; all the elements that made the show a phenomenon are established at the premiere.
A better pilot could not be expected. I didn’t forget anything before I sat down to see him again. (Jaime pushing Bran out the window might be my favorite moment in TV history.) But what I did forget is how “Winter is Coming” made me feel. Ever since the show ended, I’ve been too upset that Jon’s real parents didn’t really care and that the king of the night was easily defeated for the White Walkers to stop paying attention. I wasn’t thinking about any of this during my review. The beginning of the program is too good to waste time thinking about its end. And with six seasons of that feeling at my disposal whenever I want, it would be silly to ignore all those great episodes I still love and never see them again.
Game of Thrones he will never be able to escape his last two seasons; the last 13 episodes will not improve any review. But seeing the pilot again made me realize that one thing would improve over time: our ability to appreciate everything that preceded them.
