Former Vice President Mike Pence was operated on Wednesday to implant a pacemaker, his office said Thursday. “Routine surgery was successful, and is expected to fully recover and return to normal activity in the next few days,” Pence’s office said.
The Pence office said in 2016 it communicated to Trump’s team that he had an asymptomatic left branch block diagnosis and, for the past two weeks, had experienced symptoms such as a slow heart rate.
Pence, 61, underwent the procedure at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus in Falls Church, Virginia. In a statement, he said he was “grateful for the prompt professionalism and care of outstanding physicians, nurses and staff” at the Indiana Medical Center and its physicians.
Since leaving office on Jan. 21, Pence has returned to Indiana with his wife, Karen, though they also have a home in northern Virginia. Pence opened a transition office there in February.
Pence has also launched a new advocacy group and is working on an autobiography, which is expected to be published in 2023. He is expected to deliver his first public speech since leaving office next month in South Carolina, according to The Associated Press.
