Drew Smyly, who had been scheduled to take the mound in Atlanta on Friday afternoon against the Cubs, placed himself on the list of ten-day injuries with inflammation of his left forearm.
In light of Smyly’s injury, the Braves reminded Kyle Wright and Johan Camargo of the alternative training site. Wright will start Friday at Smyly’s place. Camargo will take the place of left-hander Tucker Davidson, who was opted for the alternative training post following Thursday’s win over the Marlins.
Braves manager Brian Snitker is optimistic that Smyly will only miss a start.
“If we were at the end of the year, we would probably continue,” Snitker said. “It simply came to our notice then. That was enough to know that there was a bit of concern when he was shooting, but we believe that losing an outing will rectify everything and recover him well ”.
Smyly has an ERA of 5.73 through two starts this year as he has allowed nine runs (seven wins) with 11 strikeouts and a walk in 11 innings.
The timing of Wright’s call works well as he was scheduled to show up Friday at the alternative training site. In 2020, the right went 2-4 with an ERA of 5.21 in eight starts.
“Down there they have enough guys who have been playing real games and so it has stayed spread, it’s been good. That’s what it was in turn,” Snitker said.
During spring training, Snitker often discussed how the Braves would need the help of all the players on their roster. Fortunately for Atlanta, with two days off next week (Monday and Thursday), it allows Smyly and even Max Fried (who is in IL with a right hamstring strain) to rest and return without missing a start. additional.
“With both Max and Drew, I think with the next few days low, [it] it allows us to maneuver things and we hope they both lose the way out, ”said Snitker. “It might be good if we weren’t too stretched.”
Smyly, who signed a one-year deal this past offseason, has struggled with several injuries throughout his career. Most notably, he missed all of the 2017 and 2018 seasons while recovering from Tommy John’s surgery, and topped 150 launches just twice since his 2012 debut.
