Oregon seeks to maintain COVID mask mandate “indefinitely”

While some states are reopening businesses or setting aside mask mandates, Oregon is responding to the trend: the idea of requiring masks and socially distancing oneself indefinitely is emerging.

One of the top health officials in the state wants to demand masks and social distances from all companies indefinitely.

“We’re not out of the woods yet,” said Michael Wood, administrator of the Oregon Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

But not everyone is happy with the possible extension of the mask rules, which according to state law expires on May 4th. The agency has garnered a record number of public comments and nearly 60,000 people have signed a petition to reject the proposal.

“When will masks be unnecessary? On what scientific studies are these mandates based, especially now that the vaccine is just days away from being available to everyone? Said State Senator Kim Thatcher, a Republican from Keizer, near the state capital.

Wood said he is reviewing the comments and will make a final decision on May 4th.
