The LSU Spring Game: An Encouraging Start

The LSU spring game ended this afternoon at Tiger Stadium with the white team leaving out the purple team, 23-14.

There were some notable performances, in particular, receivers Kayshon Boutte and Jontre Kirklin.

Boutte threw in a beautiful Myles Brennan throw for a 39-yard touchdown. He finished the game with 11 catches from 162 yards and a touchdown.

“We showed up today,” Boutte said after the game. “We could improve in some areas, but overall we did well as a unit.”

Jontre Kirklin also had a day, capturing 16 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns.

Kirklins who showed up today was significant, as the LSU offense really needs a few guys to move up to the receiving position this season.

Coach Ed Orgeron spoke after the game about LSU wide receivers “

“We need many (wide) receivers to appear”

The biggest story to be drawn from the current spring game: LSU’s defense seems much improved. Defensive coordinator Daronte Jones made his boys run around the field competing in each and every one of the shots. It was a refreshing scene to see when you think back to what this defense was missing in 2020.

“I tell you, this Daronte Jones is a talented and talented football coach.” Ed Orgeron said after the game.

Corner Dwight McGlothern has eliminated wide receivers throughout today’s game. He was active on each route, jumping, and had four passing breaks, three attacks with one of them to lose.

“Dwight (McGlothern) has had a great day today.” Ed Orgeron said after the game.

Defensive attack Jaquelin Roy led the team with three sacks. Roy looks like he’s getting back to where he left off last season, but as he enters his sophomore year, it’s becoming increasingly clear that things are starting to touch.

Derek Stingley Jr. it was also his usual self in today’s game. Intercepting TJ Finley with a dive catch. Stingley Jr. and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte were fighting and competing throughout the match.

“I think Derek Stingley is the best corner of America,” Orgeron said.

It’s just a spring game, and there’s still a lot to gather before the first week.

Still, an encouraging start to the football season.
