Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Sunday pointed to unspecified “rumors” circulating online as “junk,” as she vowed to “continue to lead” the city.
In a five-part Twitter thread posted Sunday morning, Lightfoot called the virtual talk “homophobic, racist and misogynistic,” as it warned anyone unwilling to work with it on the city’s problems. to “get out of the way.”
These are the combined contents of the Lightfoot thread:
Good morning from my mansion in Sauganash. But really, our city has no time for homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors, neither today nor today. It is shocking and disappointing to see some members of the media and verified Twitter identifiers convey this rubbish as true. If people hadn’t noticed, we have big challenges in Chicago that we need to address TOGETHER. This nonsense that some seem to have the luxury of fulfilling has not fed a person, stopped the pandemic, housed anyone living on the street, or saved a young man. Everyone who wants to work with me to move forward, I’m ready. Even if we don’t always see eye to eye, if you really love this city and want to be a part of its improvement, we get the job done. The rest, get out of the way. I will continue to lead a group of volunteers from all over our city who are dedicated to doing people’s work. The people of Chicago elected me mayor and I will continue to serve today, tomorrow, and in the future. Back to work.
Lightfoot changed the “rumors” to “junk,” as tensions grew in the city after the release of the body camera video on Thursday showing a Chicago police officer fatally shooting 13-year-old Adam Toledo , in the Little Village neighborhood last month.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Logan Square on Friday night and headed to Lightfoot’s home as they called for a change amid ongoing investigation into the shooting that has put Chicago back at the forefront of a national debate over police and racial justice.
