Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot addresses rumors of resignation on Twitter and says she will continue to serve

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot was on trend on social media for part of the weekend during what she called “homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors” on Twitter.

“It’s surprising and disappointing to see some members of the media and verified Twitter drivers convey this rubbish as true,” Mayor Lightfoot said.

Activists have renewed Lightfoot’s resignation petitions after the bodycam video showing the deadly shooting of Chicago police to 13-year-old Adam Toledo was released last week.

On Sunday morning, Lightfoot posted a series of tweets on her personal Twitter account addressing the unproven rumors she would resign as mayor of Chicago on Sunday morning.

The tweets said:

“Good morning from my Sauganash mansion. Seriously, though, our city has no time for homophobic, racist and misogynistic rumors, neither today nor any day.

It is shocking and disappointing to see some members of the media and verified Twitter identifiers convey this rubbish as true.

If people hadn’t noticed, we have big challenges in Chicago that we need to address TOGETHER. This nonsense that some seem to have the luxury of fulfilling has not fed a person, stopped the pandemic, housed anyone living on the street, or saved a young man.

Everyone who wants to work with me to move forward, I’m ready. Even if we don’t always see eye to eye, if you really love this city and want to be a part of its improvement, we get the job done.

The rest, get out of the way.

I will continue to lead a group of volunteers from all over our city who are dedicated to doing people’s work. The people of Chicago elected me mayor and I will continue to serve today, tomorrow, and in the future. Back to work.

PS: I didn’t move to a fantasy castle in Sauganash. Enjoy your Sunday. ”
