House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s representative calls on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to hold Representative Maxine Waters accountable after she told Minnesota protesters to “confront more “, promising to” launch “if necessary.
“Maxine Waters incites violence in Minneapolis, just as she incited it in the past. If President Pelosi does not act against this dangerous rhetoric, I will take action this week,” McCarthy (R-California) said. wrote on Twitter late sunday.
Waters (California) has been attacked by Republicans for his rhetoric during a Sunday afternoon appearance at Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, where a week earlier, Daunte Wright had been fatally shot dead by police and riots have since erupted.
His comments also come as Minnesota and the nation prepare a verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial in Minneapolis, as the final arguments begin on Monday.
Chauvin is on trial for killing George Floyd after the officer placed his knee on the man’s neck for more than nine minutes last May.
Waters was left with a crowd of protesters who had previously sung, “There are no good cops in a racist system!” and “No justice, no peace!”
“We have to stay on the street and we have to demand justice,” the crowd urged.
“We are looking for a guilty verdict” in the Chauvin case, Waters said. “And if we don’t, we can’t leave. We have to be more confrontational.”
Several prominent Republicans have condemned his words, including Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, who linked Waters’ actions to the big Democratic party.
“Democrats are actively promoting riots and violence. They want to tear us apart. “We need to stay on the street,” Waters said, adding that protesters needed to “be more confrontational” and that they should ignore the curfew, ”Cruz said on Twitter on Sunday.
Waters appeared on MSNBC on Sunday, saying she went to Minnesota as “kind of Aunt Maxine” to give her support to the protesters. (…)
Wright, 20, was fatally shot during a traffic stop on April 11 by former Brooklyn Center official Kim Potter, who claims she mistaken her service gun for a Taser.
Since the incident, violence has erupted at the Brooklyn Center, where dozens of people have been detained amid riots and looting.
