Illinois COVID update today: IL reports 1,959 new coronavirus cases, 22 deaths; Vaccine allocations to increase the Chicago area

CHICAGO (WLS) – Illinois public health officials reported Monday 1,959 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 22-related deaths.

There have been 1,304,200 total cases of COVID, including 21,685 deaths in the state since the pandemic began.

As Chicago joins the rest of Illinois to expand vaccine eligibility as widely as possible, it appears the state is changing its allocation strategy, sending fewer vaccines to the lower state and more in the Chicago area.

Although the cessation of Johnson & Johnson vaccine use has dealt a supply blow, overall endowments for the Chicago area are increasing.

DuPage County will receive an all-time high of more than 44,000 first doses this week, 85% more than the previous weekly high. It comes after it was announced that the state was sending more than 50,000 doses to Chicago.

“It’s my expectation as we start getting more vaccines, there will be more and more people, including younger people,” Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said.

Where does this supply come from? After months of allocating the vaccine based on the county’s population, state data show that more than 60 counties, mostly in the north, receive zero first-dose doses from the state this week.

On Sunday night, 2,128 patients in Illinois were reported to be in the hospital with COVID-19. Of these, 491 patients were in the ICU and 227 patients with COVID-19 with ventilators.

In the last 24 hours, laboratories have reported testing 47,506 specimens for a total of 21,776,820 since the pandemic began.

A total of 8,119,867 vaccines have been administered in Illinois as of Sunday night. The rotating average of seven days of vaccines administered daily is 125,212 doses. 65,233 doses were reported to have been administered Sunday in Illinois.
