MIAMI – An MRI test revealed that Dominican Starling Mart, the Marlins ’center fielder, suffered a non-displaced fracture in his 12th rib (left side), the team announced Monday afternoon. Mars will not be doing activities for a period of five to seven days before being reevaluated again, which would help help estimate when it could return to action.
Miami will place Mars on the injured list ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Orioles and make a corresponding move.
Mars came out in the middle of their ninth inning turn in Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Miami against the Giants at loanDepot park. He caught the attention of the coaching staff when he started touching his side and was visited near the batting box by manager Don Mattingly and trainer Gene Basham, after letting a Tyler Rogers turn pass.
Mars is a key piece of the Marlins roster. He started at full speed in 2021, hitting .316 / 420/491 with two homers and an OPS of 912. The Quisqueian has started all 15 Miami games in center field.
