Personalized medicine is key for patients and health systems

Mexico City, April 21 (EFE) .- Personalized medicine aims to benefit the patient and use resources effectively so that both people and health systems can take advantage, agreed this Wednesday several experts in a virtual forum.

“We are experiencing a revolution in the field of diagnosis and clinical classification of diseases,” said Dr. Carmen Aláez, a biologist at the National Institute of Genomic Medicine of Mexico.

During the virtual forum ?? Rewriting the History of Health, One Patient at a Time, “organized by Roche Mexico and the Efe Agency, Aláez noted that personalized medicine, in addition to being fundamental, represents an opportunity to provide greater sustainability in health systems of countries.

Rachelle Neumann, Communications Leader for Roche Mexico, highlighted that ?? it is important to show the importance of this topic in the voices of different experts to show a complete picture of the current impact and evolution of personalized medicine, as the adoption of this approach represents a great opportunity to have diagnoses and more precise treatments for the benefit of the whole society ??.

For her part, Betinna Zimmermann, a specialist at Roche Farma International, mentioned that personalized medicine means giving the right patient, at the right time, the treatment that really benefits them.

He explained that there are currently tools that help the patient benefit the most, such as understanding the genomic profile of each person.

“But personalized medicine is focused on giving the best benefit to the patient and at the same time using the resources more effectively,” he stressed.

BEYOND CANCER

Although the greatest development that personalized medicine has had has been in cancer, Zimmermann stressed that this approach has extended to other diseases as well.

“This is because it promises that the greatest benefits can be achieved because it can be attacked where changes are seen, where some mutation has happened and it is helped to solve the problem,” he stated.

He stressed the relevance of using data in decision-making “collecting data that is area-specific can answer certain questions to develop that data and make better decisions based on local data.”

Carlos Sorroza López, an expert in health economics, explained that cancer is one of the most costly diseases today, and one of the most catastrophic.

Therefore, he pointed out that the use of personalized medicine can have a great impact on the decisions made by clinical professionals and their costs.

“Optimizing health resources, the right treatment, at the right time, benefits the cost in health,” he said.

He assured that giving the patient the right treatment and providing benefits, helps the overuse of therapies in patients who will not benefit from this drug and this can lead to lower costs.

Finally, Kenji López Cuevas, founder of Cancer Warriors of Mexico AC, said that personalized medicine has a positive impact on cancer patients and their families because if they have more treatment options there is also more hope of regaining health.

He indicated that this approach offers more benefits to patients because more precise treatments are administered and causes the deterioration in health to stop or not be so affected.

Similarly, he has insisted that the use of personalized medicine not only benefits the patient but benefits public health systems.

“There are benefits in patient health, and significant economic benefits for the effectiveness of medications, not to mention that it is a promising option for patients,” he concluded. EFE
