The Epic Games Store it has not been profitable since the launch. Epic focuses first on building a player base and then moving on to long-term profits. To help build a player base outside of Fortnite users, Epic has created two loss-making initiatives: huge multimillion-dollar deals to get PC exclusives and monthly promotional gifts, unlike those of Xbox LIVE Gold and PlayStation Plus. Gifts work pretty well, especially in the case of GTA V.

According to new court documents in the Epic vs Apple case, more than 7 million people signed up for the new Epic Games Store accounts to get Grand Theft Auto V for free.

The free GTA V giveaway also coincides with the second largest increase in GTA V sales revenue since the game’s release in 2013. GTA V sold 5 million copies during that period.

As of December 2020, Epic Games Store had 56 million monthly active users. Enrollment in GTA V accounts for more than 12% of this figure.
