FORT WORTH, Texas (WFAA) – A Texas mother shares the final wish of her daughter, who died of COVID complications days after giving birth.
“It’s been very difficult,” Robin Zinsou said. “What keeps me going is the girls.”
Her two granddaughters were for whom her daughter, Paige Ruiz, 32, lived.
“Paige was the life of the party. She had the biggest smile, the biggest personality, ”said Zinsou. “She loved being a mother.”
Ruiz’s eldest daughter, Joanna, is two and a half years old. Ruiz was expecting his new daughter, Celeste, when he tested positive for COVID-19.
“I kept asking him, ‘Did you talk to the doctor about the vaccine?’ And she said, “No mom, I’ll wait until I have the baby,” Zinsou said.
Ruiz was due to deliver on July 30th. He tested positive on July 24, days before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as a national group of obstetricians, strongly recommended vaccination for pregnant women.
He first developed a cough which later turned into an emergency trip. Her newborn, Celeste, was delivered by an emergency cesarean section.
“She’s very healthy,” Zinsou said of Celeste. “It simply came to our notice then. He’s just a happy little baby. “
Ruiz recovered enough to be alert and video chat with his newborn daughter.
“He texted me and said,‘ Mom, I’d like to be vaccinated, ’” Zinsou said.
Ruiz’s health deteriorated and he died on August 15th.
He could never keep Celeste
“As Paige’s mother, it was hard to see her knowing she couldn’t see her baby,” Zinsou said.
Zinsou said that days before he died, Ruiz had a purpose and a lesson to share.
“He was texting his friends and sisters and he said,‘ If you know someone who isn’t vaccinated, ask them to get vaccinated. ’And that’s Paige’s last message,” he said.
Ruiz lived for his girls, but now, like many families affected by the deadly virus, only his memory remains.
“If you can’t do it for yourself, do it for the people you love,” Zinsou said.
