Recall that last month we reported on documentation for a revised PlayStation 5 model, which was first posted on the organization’s Japanese website. Now, it seems to have gone on sale quietly, with the Australian website Press-Start pointing out that the lighter hardware units have been seen below. Interestingly, the updated SKU in this instance is the Blu-ray drive, while the aforementioned manual refers to digital editing.
So what has this model changed? Well, it’s not really a massive amount. The model number is different to begin with: the launch units carry the CFI-1XXX naming convention, while this update has the CFI-11XX convention. The most obvious alteration is the screw that is used to secure the system to its bracket: it has been upgraded to a thumb screw, so you won’t have to use a screwdriver or any other tool.
It is also a little lighter, for the amount of 3.6 kg. It is unclear if there are any other changes, but they are likely to be minor. Needless to say, it’s not uncommon for Sony to upgrade its hardware shortly after release: a post-release overhaul on the PS4 reduced power consumption and replaced the hard drive bay cover with a plastic panel matte instead of the shiny throw flap.
In this particular case, the manufacturer has been struggling to get to know each other PS5 shares demand, with the device still sold. The company has said it will be able to achieve its short-term production targets and therefore it is possible that some of the changes made to this model will help it achieve this.
