Mexico City /
Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, ruled out that the partial closure of the border with the United States for non-essential travel by the covid-19 pandemic will last until 2022.
“The main factor (of the closure) was the increase in infections in both countries, then a decision was made that had to do with the homogeneous way. We would not expect the current circumstance to last until 2022 , even if it was before, otherwise, it would affect most of the activities at the border, ”he saidn press conference of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
On August 20, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security extended non-essential travel restrictions for land and ferry crossings from Mexico and Canada until September 21st.
Through its official social networks, the US agency argued that as a result of the increase in cases of covid-19, as well as the spread of the Delta variant, only essential crosses will be allowed.
“To minimize the spread of covid-19, including the Delta variant, the United States is extending restrictions on non-essential travel on our land and ferry crossings with Canada and Mexico until September 21, while continuing to ensure the flow of trade and essential travel, “he wrote.
The new measures will accumulate 18 consecutive months of blockade for non-essential travel. This, despite the plea made by local US authorities and border businessmen to lift them.
