NBC News’ Lester Holt will interview the Capitol police officer who shot Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the network announced.
The interview, which will air Thursday, will be the first time the agent has publicly revealed his identity since the events of that day. It will also come days after Capitol Police have officially exonerated the officer after an internal review found that the officer’s actions were justified.

Babbitt was shot as she tried to enter the speakers’ gallery right on the floor of the house. A group of people had crashed through a window in the gallery, through which Babbitt was trying to climb.
The officer fired a shot and hit Babbitt in the left shoulder.
Capitol Police he said Monday that the officer’s conduct was lawful and within the department’s policy of using deadly force “only when the officer reasonably believes that the action consists in the defense of human life, including the officer’s own life , or in defense of any person in immediate danger of serious physical injury. “
Federal prosecutors in Washington, DC, too refused to file charges against the agent, finding that there was no evidence to show that his actions were illegal. Babbitt’s family did filed a lawsuit looking for records of the agent who shot her.
NBC said in a statement that the agent will discuss his acquittal, as well as “his perspective on the events of that day, including the consequences of the deadly insurgency and the threats he has received.”
The interview will air Thursday at 6:30 p.m. EDT on “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt.” Additional rations will be broadcast on MNSBC and the “Today” program.
