An improved face identification matrix that works with masks is being tested, according to new leaks from Jon Prosser.
Avid leaker Jon Prosser was able to view images and videos of about 75 prototype computers and produce a composite rendering. The supposed test device shows a facial identification matrix located on top of an iPhone 12 with a few different changes.
According to the report Front Page Tech, the tested array is sorted differently from the current Face ID array and has a thinner size. For example, the camera of the test units is on the left, where the selfie camera of the iPhone 12 is on the right.
Test units are used in favor of finished iPhone models to minimize leaks or other problems. The iPhone 12 fits inside the test platform by ignoring the internal facial identification system.
The tests are performed with and without large-scale masks or goggles. In addition, testers are asked to test in various environments with different styles of glasses or masks.
Prosser’s sources could not say whether the new feature would be launched with the “iPhone 13” at launch. However, Prosser’s sources were confident that the test platform used “iPhone 13” facial identification technology.
It is unknown how Face ID technology has been modified to allow detection with masks or fog goggles. Sources leaked to Prosser say they are only testing the equipment and have not been provided with technical details about its operation.
A face recognition system that works with masks would be an important feature for the iPhone 13. Earlier, Apple updated the Apple Watch to unlock the iPhone when a mask was detected as a stopping point for some users. .
