People attending concerts and other events at the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts in Anchorage will have to demonstrate vaccination tests or a recent negative test of COVID-19 as of Sept. 1, authorities announced Wednesday.
The step is to “ensure the safe and successful return and continuation of live performances at Anchorage,” officials at the downtown theater complex said in an online ad.
Masks will be required for both vaccinated and unvaccinated attendees during performances and other events, according to the statement.
The announcement marks Alaska’s first major entertainment venue to announce a vaccination or negative test requirement for ticket holders. Last week, the Foo Fighters played mandatory shows at Anchorage and Fairbanks for thousands of audiences.
Large-scale tourist events return to Anchorage after a long hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic as a delta-varying rise reaches the state.
“These requirements will be maintained as long as transmission levels in Anchorage are ‘high’ or ‘substantial,'” the announcement said. Currently, COVID-19 transmission levels in Anchorage are “high” according to CDC guidelines.
Anchorage Opera, Anchorage Symphony Orchestra and Anchorage Concert Association are among the organizations planning large-scale live events at the center in the coming weeks and months.
Major events scheduled for September include weekly burlesque shows, a performance by The Piano Guys ’The Anchorage Concert Association, and a musical comedy show by Jane Lynch and Kate Flannery.
Ticket sellers who cannot or do not want to meet the requirements can get refunds, the center said.
