DokeV captured the imagination with his demonstration during Gamescom 2021 before today, but some fans noticed that the South Korean title has been shown before. An older trailer that premiered in 2019 described the title as an MMO, and that’s a nuisance for basic gamers – there’s almost always a resistance to online multiplayer experiences among enthusiasts, after all.
Don’t worry: insists developer Pearl Abyss that the project has evolved since its last screening, and that it is currently an open world action adventure. “DokeV was initially introduced as an MMO, but we decided to move the game in a different direction and now it’s a creature that collects action adventures in the open world,” a spokesman said. “But regardless of genre, let’s go for fun, vibe and adventure!”
The real concern here is that the title will never be released: the same developer showed Crimson Desert during The prizes of the game last year, and this has lagged indefinitely ever since. Clearly this has captured the imagination (it looks like it’s the real next-generation Pokémon Nintendo never made), but it remains to be seen how much of the debut trailer.
