August 28 (Reuters) – Disposable plastic plates, cutlery and cups are among a number of items that could be banned in England as part of a new public consultation to be launched in the fall, the British government said on Saturday.
“We will also introduce a global tax on plastic packaging from April 2022, set at £ 200 ($ 275.32) per tonne, in plastic packaging that does not meet a minimum recycled content threshold of at least 30 % “, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said in a statement.
It is estimated that each person uses 18 disposable plastic plates and 37 disposable plastic cutlery items in England, the government said.
“We have moved forward to change the tide of plastic by banning the supply of plastic straws, agitators and cottons, while the load on our transport bag has reduced sales by 95% in major supermarkets,” the secretary of Environment, George Eustice.
“Now we are looking to go one step further,” he added.
The full list of disposable items being reviewed and other details of the consultation will be announced in the coming weeks, the government said.
