The EU recommends not lifting Covid-19 restrictions for US travelers

The European Union has removed the U.S. from a Covid-19 “white list” of places where unrestricted tourists such as mandatory quarantine should be allowed to enter.

Most EU countries had reopened their borders to the Americans in June, hoping to save the summer tourist season, although most required a negative test before travel. However, the measure was not reciprocated by the United States.

The EU “white list” requires having fewer than 75 new cases per day per 100,000 people over the previous 14 days, a threshold that is currently not being met in the US.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the United States has suffered the largest number of infections in the world in the last 28 days. Israel, Kosovo, Lebanon, Montenegro and the Republic of Northern Macedonia are also removed from the EU safe list due to an increase in covid infections.

The guidelines are not binding and the recommendation is, however, that all vaccinated should be granted entry for non-essential travel.

The United States will have to complete the troop withdrawal form Afghanistan in the next 48 hours.

The White House said this morning that it had evacuated 1,200 people from Kabul in a 24-hour period that began at 3:00 ET on Sunday. Since Aug. 14, the U.S. has evacuated or helped evacuate some 116,700 people, the White House said.

The Associated Press reports that Qatar “played an excessive role” in U.S. evacuation efforts because of its ties to the Taliban and Washington. The country has hosted Taliban political leadership for peace talks with the Afghan government and the US.

The AP said: For some of the most sensitive rescue efforts in Afghanistan, Qatar conducted the operation with only a few hundred soldiers and its own military aircraft. Qatar evacuated a boarding school for girls, an all-female robotics team and journalists working for international media, among others. The Qatari ambassador accompanied bus convoys through a glove of Taliban checkpoints to Kabul and passing through several Western military checkpoints at the airport, where massive crowds, desperate to flee, had gathered.

In Los Angeles, 6,500 students missed one or more days of the first school week in the country’s second-largest district due to Covid-19 cases, according to data obtained by the LA Times.

Uncertainty for American schools amid the threat of the Delta variant
