Hawaii reports 720 new COVID infections; without additional fatalities

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Hawaii reported 720 new COVID infections on Monday and caused no additional deaths.

The death toll from the virus is 589.

Of the new cases:

  • 468 were in Oahu
  • 139 on the island of Hawaii
  • 73 on Maui
  • 34 a Kauai

There were also six residents diagnosed out of state.

A spokesman for the State Department of Health said Monday’s COVID case count does not include any case of a cumulative record on Sunday.

On Sunday, the state recorded a record number of COVID cases, reporting 1,678 new infections. The high case count was the result of system errors in a testing lab between August 15 and 25.

DOH said the delay has since been erased.

The new cases reported Monday bring the total number of infections statewide since the pandemic began to 62,949. Over the past 14 days, the state Department of Health said there have been 10,946 new infections reported.

In addition, DOH said 720 infections are the highest number of cases ever recorded on a Monday.

Lieutenant Governor Josh Green also reported that there are now 418 people infected with the virus hospitalized.

About 63.1% of the state’s population is fully vaccinated, while 71.4% have received at least one dose.
