Tim McGraw reported that he turned to his wife Faith Hill for help to make peace after drinking at eight in the morning before needing to wake his children.

In an essay for Esquire, McGraw, 54, recalled “feeling scared” after making a “big shot” of his liquor cabinet despite his parental responsibilities.

The moment served as a wake-up call for the country’s star, who stopped drinking in 2008.

“I went straight into my life”: Tim McGraw recounted that he turned to his wife Faith Hill for help for sobriety after drinking at eight in the morning before needing to wake his children.

“I remember a time when I was getting out of bed and going to the liquor store and making a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking I should wake the kids,” he called.

I went straight to my wife and said, “This is where I am.” I was scared. He grabbed me and hugged me and changed my life.

Initially, McGraw used to have “a few drinks” before dropping the shows.

“I used to have a few drinks to get on stage, because I’m kind of an innately shy person,” he told Oprah’s master class. “Going on stage, singing and being in front of people was annoying for me in many ways. That’s how I took courage, a little liquid courage, with a little Jack Daniels.

But he finally realized that he needed alcohol to be able to act.

‘I couldn’t do it without [drinking]”, he revealed.

Once McGraw realized that the habit could cost him “everything I had in my life,” he decided to quit.

“He got to the point where he knew he drank too much,” the singer recalled. ‘I knew it affected my personal relationships, it affected my professional relationships, it affected my family.

“I was becoming a person who didn’t want to be … I was at a time when I could lose everything I had in my life, especially my family. [was] it’s time to stop. And I stopped.

Since quitting alcohol, Tim has lost 40 pounds and now runs several times a day, even though he doesn’t have a strict diet.

Today I will eat a cheeseburger. I love Coca-Cola. Not as much as before. I like food, I like food. That’s one of the reasons I throw that extra hour [of exercise] “he told People in 2018.

The country star also said that if it were not for his wife, “he would be dead.”

“I would have had too much partying,” he continued. Faith saved my life in many ways, from myself more than anything. Sometimes I can go down a dark path, when you don’t feel good about yourself and she pulls me out. My wife makes me a better man.

Faith has been married to Tim since 1996 and the couple share three children together: Gracie, 24, Maggie, 23, and Audrey, 19.
