Highly recommended wildlife photographer of the year 2020 – in pictures | Natural environment

With a record number of entries from around the world, the judges of the 57th Wildlife Photographer of the Year have had the hardest work to date.

From the lynx returning to a stunning ecological disaster and the narwhal shrimp communicating at great depths, there is an incredible range in the unique and fascinating images from the Natural History Museum exhibition. The photographs are a compelling reminder of the importance of variety and variability in life on Earth to secure the future of our planet, revealed just before the first phase of the UN Cop15 global conference on biodiversity.

A special selection of highly praised photographs has been published ahead of the opening of the highly anticipated exhibition at the London Museum on 15 October 2021
