The positivity rate of Bexar COVID-19 County drops to 10.6%; leaders accredit more community testing

Low positivity rate, low hospitalizations

SAINT ANTHONY – Bexar County’s COVID-19 positivity rate has dropped three points to 10.6% this week and local leaders are accrediting more evidence to identify cases earlier.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said during Tuesday night’s briefing that hospitalizations declined slightly compared to last week. He said some warning indicators of COVID-19 are starting to move slowly in the right direction, and that more tests are helping people take action more quickly.

“We have to be very vigilant right now,” Nirenberg said.

According to Nirenberg, there were 191 new admissions to local hospitals in the last 24 hours. He said 86% of patients in local hospitals are not vaccinated.

There are 27 children in hospitals in the area, the mayor said.

COVID-19 and schools

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff says he is still worried about infections in schools after the Texas Supreme Court temporarily overturned the mask warrant for county schools. He thanked the school districts who are still fulfilling their mask mandates.

Vaccines are progressing

San Antonio Metro Health Director Claude Jacob said 67% of the eligible population is fully vaccinated. He said the county has made nominal progress in terms of vaccination and Metro Health is stepping up messages.

“We’re not out of the woods for any stretch of the imagination,” Jacob said.
