On the morning of this 1st. of September died in Havana, by a multiple dysfunction of organs, as a result of a pneumonia derived from the COVID-19, the Teacher Adalberto Cecilio Alvarez Zayas, composer, arranger, pianist and conductor, who founded in 1978 the Són 14 orchestra and, in 1984, Adalberto Álvarez and his Són; two essential formations in the history of Cuban popular music.

Born in Havana on November 22, 1948, Adalberto Alvarez always considered himself a native of Camaguey, a city where he lived his early years, began his career and earned the status of Illustrious Son and with the which maintained permanent links and developed numerous projects for the promotion of music.

This great Cuban composer and orchestrator, who remained for more than four decades in the preference of the dancing public, is the author of several songs considered classics of the national popular repertoire. Several works by him have been performed by great international figures in dance music.

He represented Cuba at dissimilis national and international festivals and stages, in which he always defended the Cuban Son, a passion that his colleagues and spectators reciprocated by shouting The Knight of the Sound. He was the main animator of the works to declare the Day of the Son in Cuba, celebrated for the first time the past 8 of May.

Winner of the National Prize of Music in 2008, was creditor also of the Distinction by the National Culture and the Order Felix Varela and received in several occasions the Cubadisco Prize, among others distinctions that express the quality and the renovating character of his prolific work. Elected by the municipality of Camagüey, he was a member of the National Assembly of Popular Power between 2013 and 2018. With the physical departure of this great creator, Cuban popular music loses one of its most genuine exponents and the dancing public to one of his most beloved artists.
