Snell flirted with non-hitter and Parents imposed D-backs

PHOENIX – Blake Snell threw seven innings without hits for San Diego before retiring, and emerging hitter David Peralta hit a single to left field in the eighth, in the Padres ’3-0 whitish Tuesday over the Diamondbacks.

The Parents were approaching the ninth most-hit game of the majors this season, which would have broken an 1884 record.

Peralta’s single against Pierce Johnson was one of just three hits for the Diamondbacks. Mark Melancon admitted two singles in the ninth before striking out Pavin Smith in his 36th save.

Manny Machado connected on a two-run homer for the Parents, in another win that San Diego desperately needed. The Parents have won three of their last four games and tied the Cincinnati Reds in the fight for last place in the National League wild-card.

Arizona opener Zac Gallen (2-8) admitted three runs in six innings.

For the Parents, the Dominican Fernando Tatis Jr. of 2-0. Curazoleño Jurickson Profar 4-2 with a tow.

For the Diamondbacks, Dominican Ketel Mart 4-0. The Venezuelan David Peralta 1-1.
