Dozens have been arrested for looting New Orleans after many evacuated their homes before Hurricane Ida devastated the area.
Sheriff of Orleans Parish, Marlin Gusman he said On WWL-TV there have been about 40 people arrested for looting in the city. Overall, 55 arrests were made for various crimes, including looting and domestic violence.
After the Category 4 hurricane hit the state, the city he imposed a curfew Tuesday to prevent crime and looting.
Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said at the time that there were some arrests for looting, but would not give any numbers because he believed it would create a “false narrative” that police did not control.
“There’s absolutely no reason for anyone to be on the streets of New Orleans city,” Ferguson added.
Many in Louisiana remain without electricity after the hurricane, and homes remain empty as residents were instructed to stay where they evacuated before the storm.
In New Orleans, an estimated 195,000 individuals have evacuated their homes, according to local media.

“We’re all in great need and we need to get closer and support each other to get over it together,” Ferguson said.
