Santo Domingo, RD.
The Dominican Government received from the governments of several Central American and Caribbean countries the request for thousands of doses of vaccines, as a donation, to protect its population through its national inoculation plans.
This was reported by the Government in a press release in which it says that Chancellor Roberto Álvarez maintains permanent contact with his counterparts in Central America and the Caribbean to respond to the specific demand of each of the countries.
The applications received so far are as follows: one hundred thousand doses for Haiti, one hundred and one thousand doses for Honduras and three hundred and four thousand doses for Guatemala.
In total, about 505,000 doses will be distributed among all applicant countries so far.
The national authorities arranged for the immediate start of an international cooperation program to assist, as far as possible, those sister countries affected by the “unfair and unequal” international distribution of vaccines.
“The ability to overcome the pandemic in a reasonable time requires the solidarity distribution of vaccines against the SARS-Cov-2 virus, because it is very likely that inequity in access to vaccines could lead to new waves of contagion in nations backward in their immunization plans, ”they indicate.
The Dominican Government recalls that the country was a beneficiary of international solidarity when the Government of India sent thirty thousand doses of vaccines to the country, later the Government of China made a donation of 50 thousand doses, “which allowed the start of our successful vaccination program, and we also received the support of the national private sector, which provided enough money to secure us two million doses of Astra Zeneca. “
The government says the country must guarantee immunity to the entire Dominican people, but understands that achieving it alone will be possible if at the same time promoting the fair and reasonable distribution of vaccines at the regional level.
