He issued a joint statement on Saturday in response to an interview McCarthy did Thursday on local NBC affiliate KGET-TV.
Durant the interview, McCarthy suggested that the FBI and several Senate agencies investigated Trump’s connection to the deadly riot and determined he was not involved.
“Well, you know what’s interesting? … The FBI has investigated. The Senate had bipartisan committees, ”McCarthy said. “And do you know what they found? That there is no involvement. ”
Thompson and Cheney said McCarthy made the claim based on an anonymous report stating that the Justice Department “concluded that Donald Trump did not provoke, incite or provoke violence on January 6.”
They said that when the report was first published, “the committee asked the agencies of the Executive Branch and the congressional committees involved in the investigation.”
“We have received responses and reports from the relevant entities and it has become clear to us that the reports of this conclusion are unfounded,” the committee leaders stated.
They then called McCarthy for the “inconsistent” comments he made since the attack.
“We also remind minority leader McCarthy of his post-January 6 statements, including his House Floor statement on January 13, which are inconsistent with his recent comments,” Thompson and Cheney continued.
Leaders were referring to a speech at the speech McCarthy delivered when the House voted to charge Trump a second time because of his connection to the Capitol riot, during which McCarthy said that “the president assumes responsibility“For the attack.
The Hill has contacted McCarthy’s office to comment.
McCarthy, an ally of the former president, has defended himself in the months following the Jan. 6 attack and has repeatedly attacked the committee for its work.
The minority leader recently issued a warning to telecom companies not to comply with the group’s request to hand over phone and email records, saying Republicans “I will not forget” those who complied.
