A surfer dies in a shark attack on the Australian beach

Four crews, including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter medical team, which included a critical care physician and a critical care paramedic, were dispatched to the scene, according to NSW Ambulance.

“Some local surfers and spectators helped this man,” NSW ambulance inspector Chris Wilson said. “Despite the best efforts of assistants, paramedics and other emergency services, the patient was unable to revive.”

The man is believed to have been in his twenties, according to NSW Ambulance.

Several beaches in the area have been closed for the next 48 hours after the incident, said NSW Police Inspector Ben Atkinson.

Australia ranked just behind the United States in the number of unprovoked shark encounters with humans in 2019, according to the University of Florida’s international shark attack archive, Reuters said.
