A surfer dies after a shark attack off the east coast of Australia

A surfer has died after being bitten by a shark off the east coast of Australia, officials said.

The man, believed to be in his twenties, suffered a serious arm injury when the shark attacked him on Sunday at Shelly and Emerald beaches in Coffs Harbor, about 330 kilometers north of Sydney, according to CNN reported.

“Some local surfers and spectators came to the aid of this man,” Chris Wilson, who is in charge of the New South Wales ambulance, told security. “Despite the best efforts of assistants, paramedics and other emergency services, the patient was unable to revive.”

Witness Aaron Armstrong said it was the first shark attack in the community that he and other residents were aware of.

“It will change the fabric a bit for a while [Emerald Beach], that’s for sure, ”Armstrong told Australian Broadcasting Corp.
