The benefits of sterilizing ours pets (Dog or cat) are many, beyond unwanted reproduction. For starters, it improves your quality of life and also your character. There are no more periods of zeal so the mood is calmer and -especially in the case of cats- the latter helps prevent them from running away from home. At the same time, the risk of contracting a long list of diseases is reduced.

In the case of females, sterilization prevents uterine infections and breast cancer, which translates into a fuller, longer and – of course – healthy life. Sterilizing it before the first zeal is the best protection against these diseases. In the case of men, it prevents testicular cancer and reduces the chance of having prostate cancer if it is done before six months.

Unsought after offspring leads to an increase in the case of abandonment of pups and even of the parents themselves. Castrating males is a simple surgery that helps regulate many hormonal behaviors, such as marking the territory (urinating everywhere) or going outside to look for a partner, which leads to possible venereal infections.

In the case of females, sterilization prevents them from staining with blood in the zeal. This will prevent suitors from chasing her insistently to party or get her pregnant. In addition, according to studies, canines and felines that are sterilized are less likely to develop breast tumors and psychological pregnancy that predisposes to mastitis and a change in temperament is avoided.

The intervention in males is very fast: it lasts about 15 minutes and their testicles are removed. In females it takes a little longer as the uterus and ovaries have to be removed. In this case the recovery is more delicate and requires other care that we must follow to the letter to prevent infections.

The sooner this decision is made the better, as from the age of 6 dogs and cats are more at risk in surgeries. Of course, if you decide to sterilize your pet, you must consider that having a hormonal change will also change its metabolism and will be more likely to accumulate body fat. That is why, even more so in females, it is advisable to take great care of their diet and have an exercise routine to avoid obesity and its complications. Check with your veterinarian if they recommend changing food after the operation.
