“I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone”: Riz Ahmed admits he went to “an intense place” after a “grueling” 22-pound weight loss to play a rapper battling autoimmune disease tycoon Mowgli
Riz Ahmed has admitted he went to an “intense place” after losing 22 pounds for his role in the film Mogul Mowgli.
The 38-year-old actor told IndieWire that he struggled with the grueling demands of the role, which saw him play a British-Pakistani rapper diagnosed with a degenerative autoimmune disease.
‘I lost [about 22 pounds] in three weeks. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, ”Riz said.

“I had a professional dietitian working with me, but it was very exhausting and took me emotionally to an intense place, which probably informed the film. It was a big part of it, as it was in a place of weakness, fatigue, and insatiable hunger.
Riz also cited Oscar-winning actor Daniel Kaluuya, 32, to put his weight loss in context, and insisted he needed to “be in his body” to truly personify the role.
“Dan Kaluuya said something I liked:‘ If you’re in the head, you’re dead. “I think it’s true. Acting has to be in your body. Everything that brings you to the body will focus you and you will be able to act in that place,” Riz said.
Riz and Mogul Mowgli director Bassam Tariq, 34, wrote the screenplay for Mogul Mowgli and was shot in 2019 in London.

Mogul Mowgli was released on Friday in the United States after being released in the United Kingdom in October 2020.
The star previously garnered critical acclaim for her role as rock drummer Ruben Stone in Sound Of Metal and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor.
