It’s Official, George Russell will race in Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton

Britain’s George Russell will be Lewis Hamilton’s teammate this season at Mercedes, after three years on the Williams team.

Russell’s arrival comes after Valtteri Bottas left Mercedes and signed with Alfa Romeo, which had a vacant seat after Kimi Raikkonen’s retirement.

The 23-year-old has always been in the spotlight of Mercedes and made his Formula One debut in 2019. Since then, his most notable result, with one of the worst cars on the grid, was the second place in classification in the last Grand Prix of Belgium, where he would also be second in the race, after not contesting the rain.

From 2022 he will live his second experience at Mercedes, having replaced Hamilton, who contracted COVID-19, at the Barhain Grand Prix. Russell was on the verge of winning the race, otherwise it would have been due to a team error in a ‘pit stop’.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has pointed out that Russell has been a “winner in every category” and that his last three seasons at Williams have been a “sample of what the future has to offer in Formula One”.

“I am confident that their relationship with Lewis will increase and that they will form a strong duo for Mercedes in the coming years,” he added.
