With its thick and fleshy impact and the satisfying taste that returns after being launched, the 2018 Leviathan Ax God of war is one of the most memorable weapons of all games. This week, members of Sony’s Santa Monico Studio and gamers from around the world lament the passing of George Mawle, a gaming engineer whom gaming director Cory Barlog calls “one of the Leviathan’s fathers.”

The news came of Mawle’s passing last September 2nd God of war Mihir Sheth, leader of combat design, who sang the praises of the engineer a long Twitter thread the weekend. During her tenure at Santa Monica Studio, which began in 2013 and lasted until her departure in January this year, Mawle worked God of warweapons, navigation, role-playing systems, combat behaviors and more. In particular, Sheth claims Mawle’s work on the Leviathan ax as well as the rotating chains of chaos leaves.

Prior to joining Santa Monica Studio, George Mawle worked as a programmer on several notable games. From 2003 to 2010 he worked as a technical director at Radical Entertainment, programming games such as Scarface: The world is yours i Prototype 2. His programming credits also include 2003 Aquaman: Battle for Atlantis for GameCube and Xbox, one of the worst reviewed games of all time.

But what will remind George Mawle are his contributions to 2018 God of war, one of the best reviewed action games Of all time. Game director and head of studio Cory Barlog took to Twitter yesterday to remember the man and Leviathan Ax who helped forge and said: “Without curiosity and intellect (by George Mawle) those moments of pure joy that reminded me of the ax would never have existed ”.

Rest in peace, George Mawle. I would suggest booting God of war and give Leviathan’s ax a two-shot in his honor this week, or just close your eyes and remember how damn that weapon feels.
