MIAMI – The right elbow of Jacob deGrom of the New York Mets is healthy, but the team does not know if he will return this season, said team president Sandy Alderson.
DeGrom, 32, has not pitched since July 7 due to an elbow sprain. It was 7-2 with an effectiveness of 1.08 and 146 attacks before being offside.
“Right now the sprain has been resolved,” Alderson said before the Mets played Tuesday night in Miami. “The elbow is perfectly intact according to MRIs and clinical evaluations from our doctors. We need to start seeing if it’s more of a chronic problem related in some way to mechanics.”
The Mets started Tuesday Tuesday in the Eastern National League, four games away from the Atlanta division leader and four games away from second place in the National League wildcards.
Alderson also said Tuesday that he has maintained little communication with acting general manager Zack Scott, who was arrested last week on charges of intoxicated driving.
Alderson said the team was “surprised by surprise” and considered Scott’s arrest “very unfortunate.”
“I can’t say much beyond the statements made earlier,” Alderson said. “Right now it’s a criminal case. Until it’s resolved, there will be no further comments from us or anyone else in the organization.”
Alderson said he contacted Scott on a couple of occasions since the arrest. As for how Scott feels, “I find it hard to know right now,” Alderson said.
The Mets put Scott on paid administrative leave after his arrest. Scott has pleaded guilty to the charge and three traffic violations.
Scott, 44, joined the Mets as senior vice president and deputy general manager in December. He was promoted to acting general manager in January after GM Jared Porter was fired following revelations that he sent sexually explicit text messages and images without invitations to a female journalist in 2016 while working with the Chicago Cubs.
