Wisconsin’s COVID-19 numbers show a fall after the holidays

MADISON, Wisconsin (WBAY) – Coming out of a holiday weekend, the Wisconsin COVID-19 report shows that the number of new cases, deaths, hospitalizations and vaccinations is declining compared to the previous week. Wisconsin saw exactly the same trends the day after Christmas, New Year’s Eve and July 4th. Some clinics and medical facilities did not have regular schedules, tests frequently decrease on weekends, and local health department staff may be retrieving records after a vacation break.

The Department of Health Services (DHS) says tests identified 788 new cases since Monday, with an average of 1,583 cases a day over the past 7 days. The state averaged about 1,335 cases each day over the three-day weekend. Preliminary figures show that 8% of coronavirus tests over the past week were positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. This is down from 8.3% on Friday.

A death was reported to DHS in Calumet County. The death toll from COVID-19 rose one to 7,667. The state continues to make an average of seven deaths a day over the course of a week. According to our calculations, 1.14% of confirmed coronavirus cases are fatal, down from 1.15%, as the number of deaths lags behind the number of new cases.

DHS numbers show fewer hospitalizations each day than last week. The state reported an average of 72 hospitalizations daily over the three-day weekend. There were 75 more hospital admissions. This is lower than the calculated average of 89 entries per day. He Wisconsin Hospital Association (WHA) updated its numbers on Tuesday for the first time since Friday and now reports that Wisconsin has surpassed the record of 1,000 people hospitalized at once, with 1,045. This is the highest number of hospitalized for COVID-19 since January 13th. Of these, 315 people are in the ICU. According to the WHA, Fox Valley hospitals treated 68 COVID-19 patients, with 14 of them in the ICU, while hospitals in the Northeast region treated 96 patients, with 31 in the ICU.

Attorney Aurora announced shortly after 3:30 p.m. that the number of patients with COVID-19 has increased 22.6% over the past week across the system, which covers Wisconsin and Illinois. Over the past month, company officials said the number has risen 101% across the system. According to Dr. Robert Citronberg, executive medical director of infectious disease and prevention advocate Aurora, the vast majority of the company’s 489 hospitalized COVID-19 patients are not vaccinated. In Wisconsin, the company says there are 249 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and in Illinois, there are 240. Four of those patients are in Advocate Children’s and 221 are in continuing health care, which covers Health at Home, SNF Post Agute Network and Advanced Care at home. Dr. Citronberg did not provide an exact number for vaccinated or unvaccinated patients.

During the holiday weekend, Calumet County joined Brown, Door, Menominee, Outagamie, Sheboygan and Winnebago counties with at least 50% of its population vaccinated. Door County became the first in our area to break the 70% threshold for its population receiving at least one dose of vaccine (previously, statewide, only Dane County could boast) .
