The Minecraft Caves & Cliffs update was announced during the Minecraft Live 2020 event on October 3, 2020. The update would be one of the most important updates in Minecraft history.
However, to make sure the update is released in the simplest way possible, Mojang split it into two parts. The first part has already been released as Minecraft 1.17 and the second part will be released later this year. Unfortunately, no 1.18 snapshots have been released, but Mojang has released quite a few experimental snapshots for Java Edition.
Minecraft 1.18 Experimental Snapshot 7
The seventh experimental snapshot has just been released and has made some major changes to the Minecraft elytras. Henrik Kniberg, one of the developers of Minecraft, has tweeted that it will probably be the last experimental snapshot 1.18. This means that normal 1.18 snapshots should start coming out soon.

Changes made in Experimental Enapshot 7 compared to the previous snapshot
Experimental Capture 7 has already come out with some very interesting changes for Elytras. What do you think of the changes? How did you feel playing with them? Https://t.co/EKUN3x2t9M

- Noodle caves are no longer covered at level 130 of Y. They can now be generated at any height. Sometimes players can find small entrances to the mountains that enter generations of noodle caves.
- Some parts of the terrain have been smoothed.
- One of the most significant changes that have been made in this snapshot is that the elytras will no longer suffer durability damage. Its durability will only go down when the player uses rockets to fly. This means that Minecraft elytras will last much longer, even without the repairing, unbreakable enchantments.
- The speed at which players can fly with elytra using rockets has been reduced. Players should keep in mind that this change does not affect the sliding speed of the elytras in Minecraft.

Mojang decided to make these changes to the elytra for several reasons: the flight speed of the rockets was too good, replacing many other modes of transport. Flying so fast also left many online servers behind. Now that players will fly more slowly with rockets and elites, they will be able to better enjoy the new generation of terrain.
