France bans the entry of unvaccinated Americans

(CNN) – France has become the last European country – and the most significant tourist destination – to remove the United States from its list of safe trips, following EU recommendations following a Covid peak in the United States.

A French government decree issued on Thursday removed the United States and Israel from the country’s “green” list to “orange,” which effectively banned non-essential trips to France for unvaccinated visitors.

According to French rules, unvaccinated travelers from any country will still be able to enter as long as they have an essential reason for the trip, but will need a negative Covid-19 test before the trip and will have to be quarantined for seven days at ‘arrival.

The French movement follows the restrictions imposed on American travelers from various other European destinations. Earlier this week, Spain changed its entry policy for U.S. arrivals and demanded that they have a certificate accrediting double vaccination.

Mistreated economies

Italy last week began requiring all visitors, including those from the United States, to demonstrate a Covid PCR or antigen test performed within 72 hours of the trip, regardless of whether they are vaccinated.

Many European travel destinations opened their borders to Americans in early summer in hopes of attracting much-needed tourist dollars to boost Covid’s battered economies.

With the Covid Delta variant extended by the United States, some countries, including Germany, had already begun restricting access to Americans before the EU recommendation. Others, such as Greece, insist that they will remain open regardless of the traveler’s vaccination status.
