In December, the UK National Video Game Museum announced its latest project: documenting and archiving the first year of the global pandemic, through the goal of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Nine months later, the exhibition is ready, and it is beautiful, with Animal Crossing-style art, player stories, and many images that act as windows to other people’s play.
The main part of the exhibition – which you can find on the Animal Crossing Diaries website – are the stories, which range from exploring fashion in pixels, to creating games within the game, and even tell with players representing their own cultural heritage in the desert. islands.

It is a moving tribute to the game that dominated the first months of the blockade, becoming a cultural and own historical moment.
Stories are divided into five themes: Maintaining a routine, making your own space, representing yourself, sharing creativity, and keeping in touch, at least one of which you can probably relate to.

There is also a chronology of events within the Animal Crossing game, an oral history of the game and the background to how a very informative exhibition was ultimately made. It’s like going to a real life museum, except without a gift shop.

To get a little more background on the exhibit, you should read this feature by Jay Castello in The Verge, where they interview the people behind the exhibit to find out where it came from and where it’s going.
