On the 124th anniversary of the Battle of Saragarhi, a life-size bronze statue of Havildar Ishar Singh was unveiled at Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Wednesdayfield, a suburb of the city of Wolverhampton, UK. This is the first monument of its kind in the UK to commemorate the bravery of 19th century Sikh soldiers. The Battle of Saragarhi took place on September 12, 1897. The conflict saw 21 soldiers of the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army fight against thousands of Afghan tribes. The 21 Sikh soldiers, led by Havildar Ishar Singh, chose to fight to the death instead of surrendering. Many people from the Sikh community, the first Sikh MP Preet Kaur Gill, and three descendants of the battle soldiers were present at the revelation ceremony.
