On Monday night, making her first appearance at the Met Gala, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) toured the annual fundraiser in a long white dress with the words “Tax the Rich” written in large letters red on the back.
Costume designer Aurora James, founder and creative director of Brother Vellies, said so Vogue“We always have to keep pushing ourselves, pushing our colleagues, pushing culture and pushing the country forward. Fashion is changing, the United States is changing. And on that issue, I think Alexandria and I are a great embodiment of the language that fashion must consider adding to the general lexicon as we work towards a more sustainable, inclusive and more powerful future ”.
“We really started talking about what it means to be working class women of color at the Met,” the congresswoman added on the red carpet. “And we’ve said that not only can we play, but we have to break the fourth wall and challenge some of the institutions.”
